PGA TOUR rookie defeats fellow pros for the title while TELUS donates $375,000 to local charity
The TELUS World Skins Game returned to Banff, Alberta this week and PGA TOUR rookie Jhonattan Vegas proved again that he is a rookie this season in name only, by winning the event with five skins for $140,000. Vegas held off his fellow Nike Tour pros in the field, including Anthony Kim, Paul Casey, Stephen Ames, and Lucas Glover for the TELUS World Skins Game title.
Vegas, who earned his first career victory earlier this season in just his fifth start on the PGA TOUR, has become one of the most popular young players in golf.
Despite Vegas’ victory, the biggest winner this week was the Alberta Cancer Foundation when TELUS announced a donation of $375,000 to the local charity. Including corporate and team member donations, more than $10 million has been given to a wide variety of important causes across Canada as a result of the TELUS World Skins Game since 2001.
“It’s been a fantastic TELUS World Skins Game at the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course here in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, and I’m proud to announce we’ve raised an incredible $375,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation. At TELUS, we give where we live, and we are thrilled the funds raised will be invested in new technology and applications in clinical trials for patients undergoing cancer treatment in Alberta,” said Monty Carter, senior vice-president, TELUS Enterprise Solutions. “On behalf of TELUS, I would like to congratulate Jhonattan Vegas on winning the 2011 TELUS World Skins Game and also thank Stephen Ames, Lucas Glover, Anthony Kim, Paul Casey and the fans whose participation helped create the most unique and entertaining Canadian golf event of the summer.”
As part of TELUS’ ongoing commitment to ‘give where we live’, and the TELUS World Skins Game’s long-standing tradition of benefiting local charities, the gift to the Alberta Cancer Foundation will support the funding of new technology and applications in clinical trials for patients undergoing cancer treatment in Alberta. In addition, it will help fund the use of cancer applications and devices for patient monitoring, tracking and health records to enhance treatment and the continuum of care.
“The Alberta Cancer Foundation is privileged to have TELUS as a partner in Alberta’s cancer-free movement. On behalf of all those facing cancer today, we thank TELUS and participants in the 2011 TELUS World Skins Game for support that will enhance clinical trials research through innovative technology,” said Myka Osinchuk, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. “This research drives progress towards more effective, less invasive therapies, ultimately increasing patient survival and easing the cancer journey. By contributing so powerfully towards a cancer-free future, TELUS is indeed ensuring the future is friendly.”
TELUS has been a long-time supporter of charities that advance cancer research, awareness and detection. TELUS’ recent Go Pink campaign raised $500,000 for the Alberta Cancer Foundation, with funds being used towards the purchase of digital mammography equipment. TELUS most recently gave $200,000 in March to Edmonton’s Campaign for Prostate Health in support of the advancement of prostate cancer health in Alberta. TELUS has also been a proud supporter of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Rethink Breast Cancer, the Canadian Cancer Society, Ovarian Cancer Canada, Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation, CancerCare Manitoba, Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and the BC Cancer Foundation. Since 2000, TELUS, its team members and retirees have contributed $15 million toward finding a cure for cancer, and continue to raise funds and awareness for early detection.
